Deepika’s
outfits details
Fabrics use: Khadi, Bandhani, Cotton Gauze Mulmul,
Silks, Dabka, Zari work, Brocade borders and patches, Mirror work patches, Silk
borders, Embroidery, Silver work Printing and more to create the outfits and
get the desired effect.
all her ghagra’s had 2 or 3 layers to it. In the ‘Nagada Sang Dhol’
song, the innermost layer has a border with elephants on it. The second layer
was orange with printed flowers on it. The top most layer had Gold Gota work
with the Tree Of Life embroidered on it.
In the holi song, lot of red with a top layer in white. The idea was to
layer them with such a mix of fabrics and work that when Deepika danced the
undulations of the ghagra would catch the eye. Even her dupatta is artfully
tucked into her waist so as to be able to show her figure and add to her
sensuality.
colour
palette of the costumes: The colours are vibrant and at the same
time the set’s colours were decided .
That is, if the set is so and so colour, then the garment has to be in a colour
other than that. All these things were according to the script, sets, stage and
design.
Challenges Anju Modi faced in making
the costumes: Each
outfit would take anywhere from 20 to 30 days to make and as soon as we
finished one, we would start working on the next. There was no break and no
slacking for almost a year and a half.
One
big challenge was that no matter what or how much fabric we used or what we did
with it, the final outfit had to look slim, flowy and natural allowing Deepika
to dance with abandon. (Easier said than done!!!!) Also Mr. Bhansali would also
never let us lose touch with reality. Thus Deepika’s regular outfits are very
stylish, authentic and yet very simple. We only used brocade or zari work in
specific outfits meant for a dressy scene.
Deepika’s makeup look was
subtle throughout the film.
Eyes: Earthy,
nude eyeshadows were used with a thick coat of mascara to open up her eyes. A
soft shade of brown under the lower water line gave her eyes softness and a
smoldering sensuality.
Eyebrows: The
eyebrows were well defined and kept thick. it also gives an air of innocence to
the face.
Lips: Her
lips were predominantly done with a subtle pink shade, but applied less like a
lipstick and more like a stain.
Hair: Hair
was blow dried with product, loosely pinned, twisted or braided in the front
and held back in a loose bun or braid or left open giving her a very sensuous
yet natural look.
Tattoos: Deepika had fewer tattoos than the other characters-
it was drawn across her neck in a pattern. Every actor getting the tattoo would
have to sit/stand patiently for hours since the tattoo artist painted every
tattoo with a paintbrush.
Anju Modi also designed Priyanka Chopra’s outfit
Priyanka’s character is that of a mujrewali or courtesan and the community that
she comes from – though they sing, dance, and entertain – has an elevated
status in society and are quite bold and daring because they are not affected
by any social stigmas. And since the characteristics of a mujrewali are understood – they are sexy,
desirable.the outfit made for Priyanka was
body fitting but still had to look Gujarati.
Maxima Basu designed costumes for Ranveer Singh’s character Ram.
The look of Ranveer Singh in the movie
Ram-Leela: Ram is a character who is exposed to the world but he
lives in his village in Kutch, so his clothes had to reflect that duality,This
is why for every ripped jeans or boots he sports, you also see him flaunting a
kediyu and kohl-rimmed eyes.
From the
entire look of the movie what style can we pick
Rabari tattoos: Butterflies
and Chinese characters are boring. If not the motifs, the ribcage is prime real estate for ink. It's hidden most of the
time, but teases under the right clothes.
Kediyu: It's unlikely that anyone can pull off the frock top better than Ranveer, but if you do, choose a vibrant purple one over jeans, but without his cowboy boots please. Kolhapuris will do just fine.
Jaisalmer glass work: Glass work jewellery in place of crystals or semiprecious stones.
Layered ghaghras: The ghagras are layered with panels and petticoats. Start with a sari on the bottom, then layer with embroidery and top off with a weave or pattern, like bandhej.
Patchwork blouses: With pattern on the front, thick Kutchi embroidery at the back and sleeves in different but harmonious colours and patterns.
